Historic 1956 banquet menu from Pakistan’s first state visit to China, signed by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and other powerful Chinese statesmen

Remarkable and historic official menu from the state banquet honoring the first Pakistani state visit to China, held in Beijing on October 19, 1956, one page, 4.5 x 8.5, signed in fountain pen by six powerful Chinese statesmen—Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Huang Yanpei, Peng Zhen, Chen Yun, and Zhu De—as well as Prime Minister Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy of Pakistan. The menu bears a state insignia printed at the head of the sheet, and lists a delectable menu of exotic offerings: “Consommé of Swallow Nest and White Agaric, Shark’s Fin in Brown Sauce, Vegetable Rolls in Three Colours, Fried Spiced Chicken, Vegetarian Macedoine, Roast Peking Duck, Cream of Walnut and Date, Assorted Pastries, Fruits.” The signed menu is mounted, handsomely matted in red cloth, and framed to an overall size of 15 x 18.5. In fine condition.

Suhrawardy, a scion of one of British Bengal’s most prominent Muslim families, had taken office as prime minister only one month earlier, and aimed to cultivate pragmatic ties with Communist China. In addition to the two heads of state—Mao Zedong and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy—this card is signed by some of China’s most influential statesmen, responsible for developing it into a modern nation: Zhou Enlai (1898-1976, the official host and Premier of the PRC), Huang Yanpei (1878-1965, Vice Premier of the State Council and Minister of Industry since 1954), Peng Zhen (1902-97, Mayor of Beijing, deposed in 1966 but rehabilitated in 1979 and later Chairman of the National People’s Congress), Chen Yun (1905-95, leading economic politician, Party Vice Chairman and later one of the major architects and important policy makers for the Chinese economic reform), and Zhu De (1886-1976, Vice Chairman of the Communist Party and of the PRC, long the Commander-in-Chief of the People’s Liberation Army and Mao’s military advisor since the 1930s).

During this first visit to China by a Pakistani Prime Minister, the delegations discussed matters such as the exchange of goods (coal for cotton) and industrial development, improvements in water management, and the training of engineers. In his conversation with Suhrawardy, Zhou sought to dispel fears of Chinese hegemony: China herself, he pointed out, had suffered under Western colonialism and now wished to pursue industrial development in the spirit of peaceful co-existence with all countries, based on mutual respect. Zhou insisted to a skeptical Suhrawardy that the education of the current generation of Chinese political leaders would ensure that future generations would not commit war or aggression. A remarkable and historic piece, representing the foundation of the relationship between China and Pakistan that remains strong to this day.

Jobs writes a check to one of Apple’s great unsung heroes: RadioShack

Exceptional Apple Computer Company check, 6 x 3, filled out and signed by Jobs, “Steven Jobs,” payable to Radio Shack for $4.01, July 23, 1976. Headed “Apple Computer Company,” the check uses Apple’s first official address at “770 Welch Rd., Ste. 154, Palo Alto”—the location of an answering service and mail drop that they used while still operating out of the famous Jobs family garage. In very fine condition.

A fascinating check related to one of the great unsung heroes of the early computer boom: RadioShack. The biggest tech innovations of the 20th century are all, in varying degrees, indebted to the Boston-based electronics store. Steve Wozniak, who spent hours roaming the aisles of RadioShack as a teenager, saved up enough money to purchase their pioneering TRS-80 Micro Computer System, which he used to build his notorious ‘blue box,’ an illegal device that could make free long-distance phone calls. The ‘blue box’ cemented the first business partnership between Wozniak and Jobs, a duo that managed to make and sell roughly 200 of the boxes for $150 each. Jobs later told his biographer that if it had not been for Wozniak’s blue boxes, ‘there wouldn’t have been an Apple.’ In other words: there wouldn’t have been an Apple if it had not been for RadioShack.

During this period in the summer of 1976, roughly four months after founding the Apple Computer Company, Jobs and Wozniak were hard at work building their first product. Though initially conceived as a kit to be soldered together by the end user—like most enthusiast computers of the era—the Apple-1 became a finished product at the behest of Paul Terrell, owner of The Byte Shop in Mountain View, California, one of the first personal computer stores in the world. Terrell offered to buy 50 of the computers—at a wholesale price of $500 a piece, to retail at $666.66—but only if they came fully assembled. With this request, Terrell aimed to elevate the computer from the domain of the hobbyist/enthusiast to the realm of the mainstream consumer. Wozniak later placed Terrell’s purchase order in perspective: ‘That was the biggest single episode in all of the company’s history. Nothing in subsequent years was so great and so unexpected.’

Thus, the Apple-1 was one of the first completely assembled ‘personal’ computers that simply worked out of the box with a few accessories that could be purchased from a local electronics store (a power supply, case, keyboard, and monitor were not included). All together, over a span of 10 months or so, Jobs and Wozniak produced about 200 Apple-1 computers and sold 175 of them. A superb check signed by the innovative personal computing pioneer.

Description

Exceptionally rare 1978 Oregon business venture document

DS, twice-signed “Steven Jobs,” eight pages, 8.5 x 11, August 17, 1978. Partnership agreement between Jobs and Robert Friedland for a place of business located at “Rt 2, Box 472, McMinnville, Oregon.” The eight-article document includes provision for the purpose of the business, “The partnership shall engage in the business of investments, including particularly but not being limited to real estate investments, and in such other business of a similar nature or related thereto as shall be agreed upon by the partners.” Other articles include capital contributions, profits and losses, management, their partnership, and the dissolution of the partnership. Signed on page seven in blue ballpoint by Jobs, “Steven Jobs,” and Friedland, “Robt. M. Friedland.” The eighth page, labeled “Exhibit A,” is also signed by Jobs and Friedland, and lists a 170-acre property in Oregon for the business. Document is still stapled into its original legal folder. In fine condition, with expected document wear. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.

Before they became billionaire business tycoons, Jobs met Friedland, the charismatic student body president at Reed College, and was instantly captivated. Though the future Mac genius dropped out of Reed after six months to begin developing computers with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, he continued to spend a great deal of time with Friedland, taking spiritual trips to India and working on his communal farm and apple orchard near McMinnsville; numerous accounts, including one from Wozniak, have attributed the Apple name to Jobs’s time working in the orchard. This extremely rare and intriguing document solidifies claims of the strong connection between the two young entrepreneurs. With the success of the Apple II, which hit the market in 1977, and preparation for what would become one of the most successful IPOs in history, Jobs had almost completely distanced himself from Friedland by 1980. Authentically signed Steve Jobs material is exceedingly hard to find, and this twice-signed document, incredibly substantial and significant in its connection to a major figure in his life, is of the utmost rarity. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.

Description

“steven jobs” purchases land in Yamhill County, Oregon—home to the original ‘Apple’ orchard
DS, signed “steven jobs,” three pages, 8.5 x 11, February 5, 1979. Corrected memorandum agreement pertaining to the sale of “certain real premises situated in Yamhill County, Oregon,” made one year earlier by Gene R. Stephenson, Lucy M. Stephenson, and Marjorie Bederman, to Steve Jobs for $150,000. The document corrects an “error in the description of the real premises” previously recorded. The first page is signed in ballpoint by Steve Jobs and countersigned by the sellers; the second page is notarized three times, with Jobs also making a handwritten amendment to the date, “March 15,” and penning his initials in the margin, “s.j.” The third page, headed “Schedule A,” offers the revised and corrected description of the tract of land. Stapled into its original blue legal folder. In fine condition, with a light stain to the top of the first page, and creasing, tears, and losses to the bottom of the inconsequential attached “Schedule A.”

Though today he is most closely associated with Cupertino and Silicon Valley, Steve Jobs came of age in Oregon: he enrolled in Portland’s Reed College for the fall semester in 1972, but dropped out after just six months to preserve his parents’ meager funds. However, he hung around campus for a year and a half to audit creative courses, including classes on Shakespeare, dance, and calligraphy—these would help to shape his artistic worldview that influenced the innovation of the Macintosh computer. In his 2005 Stanford commencement speech, Jobs recalled: ‘If I had never dropped in on that single calligraphy course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.’

While at Reed, Jobs met and befriended Robert Friedland—now a billionaire financier—who was serving as the charismatic undergraduate student body president. Friedland served as the caretaker of an apple orchard south of Portland near McMinnville—the largest city in Yamhill County—which he turned into a commune called All One Farm. Jobs spent a great deal of time at the commune, and numerous accounts (including one from Steve Wozniak), attribute Apple Computer’s name to Jobs’s time working in the Yamhill County orchard. As the company began to achieve success—the Apple II was introduced in 1977 and became an overwhelming success—Jobs sought to diversify his investment portfolio, and purchased land near the place where he found his greatest inspiration.

Description
Albert Einstein’s curvy calabash pipe, originally sold by Charles Hamilton Galleries in 1970

Albert Einstein’s original calabash pipe, measuring approximately 5″ x 4″ x 2.25″, with a large ivory-colored meerschaum and detachable dark brown mouthpiece bearing a London maker’s mark. In fine condition, with general wear from use. Attributed to Einstein by a Charles Hamilton Galleries auction listing of June 5, 1970, a clipping of which is included. Also includes a typed identification card and the original Charles Hamilton Galleries, Inc. envelope.

Einstein was well-known for his pipe smoking—other than his messy hair, there may be no more characteristic element of his image than his pipe. Even in later years when he curbed his tobacco use on doctor’s orders, he could not bear to give up the tactile experience—he would smokelessly cradle the bowl in hand or clench the stem between his teeth while he did his deepest thinking. Upon joining the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club in 1950, he reportedly said: ‘I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.’

Description
Significant collection of Einstein’s pipes, found in his Princeton home

Remarkable collection of nine of Albert Einstein’s pipes, with a Jewish menorah-style wooden pipe stand for eight. Pipes measure from 4? to 12? in length, with most featuring briar wood bowls. While the majority are handsome but simple in form, two are quite decorative—one has a carved owl design (perhaps given to Einstein as a gift symbolizing his wisdom), and another white pipe features an intriguing design of a foot kicking a ball. The wooden holder, measuring 8.5? x 4.75? x 7?, has flexible slots to support the stems of eight pipes, and resembles the form of a menorah—a unique and interesting homage to Einstein’s heritage. In overall very good to fine condition, with varying degrees of wear from use.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the present owner, in full: “My father was employed at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton NJ as a caretaker of real estate properties owned by IAS from 1969 to 1995. Some of these properties were located on Mercer Street, Battle Road, Olden Lane, Maxwell Lane and others when these houses became vacant he would have to clean and prepare them for the next professor to move in. It was in the mid 1980’s when he came home with the this pipe collection and the menorah-like wooden pipe stand. My father had built a shelf in our living room to display the pipes and stand. After both my parents had passed on, I had to clean out their home and I kept the pipes.”

Albert Einstein lived at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, from 1935 until his death in 1955, while employed by the Institute for Advanced Study. His stepdaughter, the sculptor Margot Einstein, remained in the house until her death in 1986; it was presumably at this time that the house was cleaned out.
