Overall with a mottled dark green, brown patina. The tip of the upper uraeus broken off, tips of fingers and nose worn. Some dirt encrustation to underside of knees and under armpits. This bronze figure appears intact, with no sign of repair or restoration, and wear commensurate with age.
The plumed headdress is partly missing and the break has been filed down to a straight line. The red glass sun-disc is also partially missing.
Appealing dark green patina with some remains of encrustation in particular over the headdress.

the god standing on a trapezoidal base, his hands emerging from his cloak and holding the crook and flail, and wearing a broad collar with tassel behind, chevron-incised beard with chin-straps, and the atef-crown with ram horns, the base engraved on two sides with a line of inscription translating “May Osiris give life (to) Penes, son of Herbes.”

拍品狀況
Tenon underneath base was sawn off for drilling. Tip of proper right horn chipped. Dents on lower outside edge of flail. Two deep scratches across upper back. Surface slightyly worn, probably due to mechanical cleaning; appears to have been repatinated and varnished, probably around same time as custom-made base, which looks early 20th c. made-in-Egypt). Areas of brownish material across entire front of figure look like some kind of incrustation on top of corrosion.

Statuette of Osiris, Cupreous metal

Osiris, foremost of the Egyptian funerary gods and ruler of the underworld, stands upright and wears his atef crown. The crown’s feathers, now lost, were separately cast and mechanically attached into slots on the sides of the crown. The god’s eyes are deep-cut, probably for the addition of gilding or inlay. He is dressed in a close-fitting enveloping garment and he holds the royal crook and flail with his hands poised symmetrically with the fists touching.

Osiris statuettes such as this one were some of the most abundant temple offerings in Egypt by the first millennium B.C., reflecting both the god’s importance and changing cult practices that spurred the wide-scale dedication of deity statuettes. Many statues of Osiris were offered in temples and shrines belonging to him, but they have also been found in other contexts, for example near temples and shrines honoring other prominent deities or in animal necropoleis.

Bronze statuette of the god Osiris, depicted in mummiform with atypical attributions including the white crown of upper Egypt with central uraeus and plumes on either side on head, royal beard and holding clutch and flail in either hand.
Rendered in-the-round standing upon trapezoid groundline with integral tang beneath.
A dark green patina covers the whole statuette.

Osiris was one of the most popular ancient Egyptian gods and was connected with male fertility. He was said to be the first Pharaoh of Egypt and was murdered by his brother Seth for his crown. Osiris was revived by Isis, his wife and sister, to conceive Horus, the son who would avenge his death. After death, Osiris became ruler of the underworld and god of the dead, which is why he is shown with the crook and flail, the symbols of authority for Egyptian rulers.

Lot Essay
In Egyptian mythology, Horus was the son of Osiris and Isis, and was depicted as a falcon-headed god of the sky. According to myth, Osiris ruled over the Egyptian pantheon until he was murdered by his jealous brother Set. Isis, grieving her dead husband set out to resurrect him by gathering his dismembered body parts that were scattered throughout the Nile river. The only piece that was missing was his phallus which had been consumed by a fish. She created a golden replacement for the organ, and was able to bring the god back to life long enough for him to impregnate her. From this union came Horus, who also inherited the wrath of his uncle Set. Horus and Set continuously met in different battles, with Horus always beating his persistent uncle, leading to his ultimate ascendance to Osiris’ throne.

Here in the present example, there are two notable features that reference uncle-nephew battle. Firstly, Horus is depicted as standing over the pelt of a deceased oryx. The oryx was associated with Set in ancient Egyptian religion, thus clearly referencing Horus’ triumph over his uncle. Secondly, his eyes are inlaid with gold filigree. According to myth, in his role as sky-god, one of Horus’ eyes represented the sun, and the other the moon. Precious metal inlays are not uncommon in fine Egyptian bronzes of gods and Pharaohs from this period, but for Horus the visual implications of gilded eyes as celestial planet makes for a particularly striking combination of material and myth

The falcon-headed god striding forward with his left leg advanced, upon a deceased oryx, his right arm straight at his side, the left bent with the forearm extending forward, both hands fisted around now-missing attributes, wearing a short pleated kilt with a central tab, a multi-strand broad-collar, and a striated tripartite headcloth, surmounted by a uraeus-fronted Double Crown, the frontal spiral now missing, the ears exposed, the face with a small beak, black bronze inlay for the facial markings and pupils, the eyes outlined in gold filigree, on an integral rectangular plinth inscribed on all four sides, reading: “Invocation-offerings (for) Haroeris (?)(and) Mut, who give life, prosperity, health, a long lifespan and a good old age (for) Pa-iu, son of P(a)-di-Aset, her (sic) mother Ta-heret, and wife Aset, Justified”
