This bowl is outstanding in its extremely fine workmanship and in its design which reflects the familiarity and fascination of Tang high society with exotic animals introduced via the the Silk.
Although the present bowl appears to be unique, it is stylistically comparable with a footed bowl of similar form and size, densely decorated with a series of small figures amongst birds, animals and flowering branches, from the collection of Frederick M. Mayer and included in the exhibition The Arts of the T’ang Dynasty, Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, 1957, cat. no. 327, sold at Christie’s London, 24/25th June 1974, lot 171, and again in these rooms, 30th March 1978, lot 67. See another slightly smaller footed bowl of this rich decoration from the collection of Dr. Pierre Uldry included in the exhibition Chinesisches Gold und Silber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, 1994, cat. no. 143.
It is rare to find Tang silver bowls of this simple yet elegant form decorated with an overall chased design as seen on the present vessel. The design pattern is expertly placed and superbly executed, a testament to the very fine workmanship of the Tang silversmith. Vessels of this exquisite quality and rich decorative motif were made for imperial use at the many banquets held by the Tang court. For further information on the use of silver and gold utensils used at banquets see Han Wei, ‘Gold and Silver Vessels of the Tang Period’, Orientations, July 1994, pp. 31-35.

Circular silver boxes of this shape, of various sizes, both decorated and undecorated, were popular during the Tang dynasty, and were used for various purposes. A parcel-gilt silver box of the same shape, and comparable size (12.4 cm. diam.), decorated with a different formal foliate design reserved on a ring-punched ground, in the Shaanxi History Museum, is illustrated in Selected Treasures from Hejiacun Tang Hoard, Beijing, 2003, pp. 187-92, no. 44. An inscription painted inside the cover indicates that it was used to hold granulated gold, which was most likely used for medicinal purposes, as were the contents of a plain silver box of similar shape, but larger size (17.5 cm.), also from Hejiacun, illustrated pp. 153-56, no. 33. An inscription painted inside the box lists the contents, which included cinnabar and pieces of jade. Another related parcel-gilt silver circular box from Hejiacun (12.4 cm.), with different formal foliate decoration is illustrated by C. Michaelson, Gilded Dragons: Buried Treasures from China’s Golden Ages, British Museum, 1999, p. 121-22, no. 85, where the author, p. 122, notes that these types of boxes were used not only as containers for medicines, but were also “the most popular gifts from the emperor to his courtiers, officials and concubines”, and might have contained makeup or medicines.

The goblet shape of this stem cup appears to be very rare. Another cup of this shape with similar decoration in the Yamato Bunkakan, Nara, Japan, is illustrated by Qi Dongfang, Tangdai jin yin qi yan jiu (Research on Tang gold and silver), Beijing, 1999, pl. 2, and again in a line drawing, p. 41, fig. 1-54. The flowers and leaves appear similar to those on the present cup, and one can see in pl. 2 that there are birds in flight amidst the scrolling vine, however they are chased or engraved and not ring-punched as they are on the present cup.

The decoration of a pair of mandarin ducks on this box can be seen on other small silver boxes of Tang date, such as the example of even smaller size (2.9 cm.) illustrated in World of the Heavenly Khan: Treasures of the Tang Dynasty, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2002, p. 56. Unlike the pair of ducks on the present box, which are shown confronted, these ducks are shown standing side-by-side on a lotus leaf. A pair of confronted ducks standing on a lotus decorates the top of a parcel-gilt silver box excavated in 1970 from Prince Bin’s treasure hoard at Hejiacun, Shaanxi province, illustrated by Han Wei and Christian Deydier, Ancient Chinese Gold, Paris, 2001, p. 229, pls. 546-547. As one can see in pl. 547, the bottom of the box has different decoration, as does the bottom of the present box. A pair of mandarin ducks, especially when combined with lotus (yuanyang), conveys the wish for a harmonious marriage, making it fitting decoration for a lady’s silver box.
