The inscription cast on the interior of the current zhi can be found on a bronze gui illustrated by Yan Yiping, Jinwen zongji, Taipei, 1983, p. 1130, no. 2157. Also illustrated, p. 3564, no. 6559, is a zhi of similar size to the present vessel cast with a similar band of leiwen and thin bow-string bands on the tall foot.

The present zun vessel belongs to a distinct category of late Shang and early Western Zhou dynasty bronzes characterized by the eccentric ‘smiling mouth’ formed below the taotie. The most famous example of this type is a zun in the Sackler collection, dated to the 11th century BC, and intricately cast with flanges and three registers of taotie masks, the central one bearing a toothy grin, illustrated in Robert W. Bagley, Shang Ritual Bronzes in the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, Washington D.C., 1987, pl. 49 and front cover. A small number of zun from this category and of similar form to the present example are known, including one in the Idemitsu Museum, illustrated in Ancient Chinese Arts in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1989, pl. 46; another excavated in 1999 and now in the Institute of Archaeology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, illustrated in Wu Zhenfeng, Shangzhou qingtongqi mingwen ji tuxiang jicheng / Compendium of Inscriptions and Images of Bronzes from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, vol. 20, Shanghai, 2012, pl. 11213; and a third sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 7th July 2003, lot 612.
The box for this lot is inscribed with a note by Yuzo Sugimura, dated 1964.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture
-X-rays show the zun to be in overall good condition
-a diagonal crack on one side of the ring foot, which has been stabilized and over painted with a few short hairline cracks
-overpainting to a narrow section on the exterior of the mouth
-there are some expected areas of encrustation, and the expected nicks and chips to edges
-there is a small drilled hole on the bottom of foot ring for testing, the result of which is published in J. Rawson, Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, vol. IIA, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, Washington, D.C., 1990, Table 2
The inscription may be translated as ‘Bo made this precious sacrificial vessel’. This inscription can also be found on a you vessel with similar decoration sold at Sotheby’s London, 2 March 1971, lot 57. This you is very likely to be one of the companion vessels to the present zun, forming a ritual vessel set. A similar early Western Zhou zun and you set in the Hakutsuru Bijutsukan, Kobe, is illustrated by J. Rawson in Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, vol. IIB, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, Washington, D.C., 1990, p. 577, figs. 87.4 and 87.5.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
There are some minor chips to the mouth rim. It is possible that the top tip of one of the flanges has been polished down slightly. There are some general age-related surface knocks, scratches and wear throughout. There are three small chips to the foot rim. There are two small areas of degradation to the sides which have possibly been touched up.

The inscription to the interior of the vessel reads zha fu ding bao zun ding, followed by a further illegible character. This may be translated as ‘this precious vessel was made for Fu Ding’.
