skilfully modelled in the form of a shell, the deep box hinged with a flat cover, the exterior enamelled with striations simulating the undulating surface of a shell, the cover further decorated with narcissus, peony and other flowering plants, the interior enamelled white on one side and with a fruiting melon branch beneath fluttering butterflies on the other

Chinese Enamel Snuff Box in Shell Form, Qianlong Period circa 1770

Rare Chinese export snuff box, enamel on copper, of scallop shell form, the one half naturalistically modelled and painted, the other similarly decorated with the addition of several flowering plants, the lid interior with another flowering plant spray with three different flowers on the same stem, set within gilt copper mounts.

Qianlong period, circa 1770.
