The imagery on this dish is reflected in a hanging scroll by the Ming painter Wu Wei (1459-1508) entitled Beihai Zhenren ‘Perfected Man of the Northern Sea’, which Richard M. Barnhart discusses in Possessing the Past: Masterpieces of the National Palace Museum. Barnhart identifies the figure in the painting as the embodiment of the philosopher Zhuangzi (B.C. 369-286)’s conception of the ‘Perfected One’, zhenren, one who is unaffected by physical calamities and travels beyond the four seas, and hence in Wu’s painting and in our current lot, the immortal is seated on the back of a tortoise.
Another mention of the Beihai Zhenren is in the Huainanzi, a second-century B.C. compilation of Daoist stories, where Lu Ao travelled to the North to seek perfection. There he encountered an immortal withdrawn into the shell of a tortoise eating crabs and clams. When asked to guide Lu Ao on his quest, the immortal told him that the purity of the Dao is beyond the physical world and vanished into the clouds.

Lot 2809

The theme in this dish is associated with the Dragon Boat Festival (duanwujie), which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Many of the themes associated with duanwujie relate to the desire to combat evil forces and poisonous creatures. On this dish we see the legendary Daoist priest Zhang Tianshi, who cuts through evil with his sword. The snake, centipede, toad, scorpion and lizard constitute the ‘Five Poisons’ in Chinese traditions. A lizard is depicted on the exterior of this dish. Both the well and the exterior of the dish are painted with butterflies, pomegranate flowers and other blossoms. The pomegranate flowers, which are in bloom at the time of the Dragon Boat Festival, are associated with fertility and were worn as amulets by women. The brilliant red colour of the pomegranate flowers is also the colour of joy.
Compare to an almost identical dish of the same size, sold at Christie’s London, 17 June 2003, lot 24. A slightly smaller Wanli wucai dish with similar theme but differently rendered with Zhang Tianshi surrounded by all the ‘Five Poisons’ is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, no. 47. The current dish also relates to somewhat larger Wanli wucai dishes in the collections of the Percival David Foundation and the Tianminlou Foundation (illustrated by R. Scott & R. Kerr in Ceramic Evolution in the Middle Ming Period, V&A and Percival David Foundation, London, 1994, p. 22, no. 25; L.A. Cort & J. Stuart, Joined Colors, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, 1993, p. 130, no. 57, respectively), which have the theme of the Five Poisonous Creatures on the back and another aspect of the Duanwujie festival – dragon boat races – on the interior.

Suzanne Valenstein,《The Herzman Collection of Chinese Ceramics》,紐約,1992年,圖版85。

Lot Essay
While the subject of boys at play was very popular on imperial porcelain produced during the Jiajing reign, those decorated in the wucai palette are very rare. Only two other Jiajing-marked jars of this design appear to have been published, one from the Lauritzen collection is illustrated by Osvald Siren, Kinas konst under tre årtusenden, vol. 2, Stockholm, 1942, fig. 543, which has a reduced neck; and the second was formerly in the collections of A.T. and Montague L. Meyer, sold at Sotheby’s London, 10 July 1951, lot 84, and again 17 February 1959, lot 92, from the Kolkhorst Collection, and then again 14 April 1970, lot 92.
The design continued into the Wanli period, see for example, a Wanlimarked jar illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. 1, Tokyo, 1976, no. 934; and another sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 26 September 1989, lot 585. The painting style on both of these jars is much more stylised and less refined than their predecessors.
