Catalogue note
Hu Wenming from Songjiang, Jiangsu province, was one of the most accomplished master metalworkers of the late Ming period, who specialised in the production of gilt metal vessels for the scholar’s desk. There is some wear and discolouration consistent with age, and some traces of oxidation/ verdigris, most notably to an area measuring approximately 1cm square, just below the mouth rim. There are two small dents to the mouth rim.

此爐工藝繁複，結合多種裝飾手法，口沿及足沿各飾錯銀回紋一周，腹部錘揲各式海獸紋如應龍、海馬、麒麟等，紋飾上鎏金再細刻陰紋，地鏨刻海波紋，爐底鎏金陰刻「雲間胡文明製」款，形制規整，構圖生動具立體感，當為胡文明作品中之佳作。

胡文明為晚明銅器製作大家，尤以製爐聞名，北京故宮藏一件簋式爐，腹部紋飾及雙耳造型跟本爐一致，刻相同款式，惟尺寸略小及口沿裝飾迥異，定為「國家館藏壹級文物」（圖一），著錄於《文物藏品定級標準圖例 – 銅器卷》，北京，2006 年，圖版143 號。

亦可比較數件主題紋飾一樣的同類例子，均刻「雲間胡文明製」款，惟邊沿裝飾略異，包括一件收錄於Sydney L. Moss, Ltd. 的《The Literati Mode》，倫敦，1986 年，圖版145 號；一件著錄於《蘇富比香港二十週年》，香港，1993 年，圖402 號；一件2011 年6 月1 日於香港佳士得拍賣，拍品3946 號。

明代銅器之器形多源自青銅器，本瓶應以青銅壺為藍本。近似例可參考一件器型、紋飾相仿者( 高52 公分)，其於2012 年11 月6 日倫敦佳士得拍賣，拍品171 號，以及器型類似的一例，載於《The Second Bronze Age: Later Chinese Metalwork》，香港，1991 年，圖版64 號。此瓶外底鑄款「內造」二字，故推測其應為內府監造之物。

The first is a conjoined tool vase decorated in relief with a pair of phoenix to the lower body and two bats to the neck. The second is a matching box and cover decorated with pairs of archaistic confronting chilong to each side and a stylised taotie mask to the cover.

Attributed to Hu Wenming

Implements commonly used for burning incense included a box, a burner, a flat-bowled spoon and tongs, and a vase for storing these utensils. The burners are often modeled after archaic bronze vessels. Although it is not clear if the three Chinese objects displayed here (2015.500.6.22–.24) originally formed a set, all are inscribed with the name of the artist, Hu Wenming, and exhibit the same decorative technique.

Catalogue Note:
This lot is made of fine bronze partially gilt, consisting of two pieces with a bottle and a box. The bronze bottle is of slightly flat oval shape with a narrow neck, surface carved with images of phoenixes and bats. The box is of rectangular form, surface carved in relief with stylized chilong. Both of the pieces are inscribed on the bottom with the six-character mark Daqing Qianlong Nianzhi.
