With reeded scroll handles, the domed cover with ring handle, with fluted bands and gadrooned borders, the tureen engraved with a coat-of-arms, the stand and cover with a crest, each later engraved with baron’s coronet, marked on stand, foot and cover, each engraved ‘No. 1′, the stand with scratchweight ’76=16’, the cover ‘103=8’

The arms are those of Smith impaling Barnard quartering Boldero, for the banker and politician Robert Smith (1752-1838), created lst Baron Carrington in 1796, and his wife Anne (d.1827), daughter of Lewyns Boldero Barnard of South Cave, co. York, whom he married 1780.
