The current brush pot, though unsigned, displays spectacular craftsmanship with intricately rendered details and complex composition, and was undoubtedly the work of a master carver. The two men depicted on the brush pot are Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao, who, according to legend, encountered and married two female immortals in the Tiantai Mountain while collecting medicinal herbs. Six months later, they returned home, only to discover that six generations had passed while they were away. This story was first recorded in the Tang Dynasty in Taiping Guangji and was made popular in the Yuan dynasty with several versions of theatre plays.
Compare to a bamboo parfumier carved with the same subject-matter by the Ming dynasty master Zhu Ying, excavated in a tomb in Baoshan County in Shanghai. Despite sharing the same theme, the excavated parfumier depicts another scene in which the two protagonists are playing chess with one of the female immortals, while the other immortal stands underneath a gate inscribed with the characters ‘Tiantai’. The simpler and more fluid carving of this parfumier is markedly different from that of the current brush pot, which is notably more elaborate and layered. A rubbing of the excavated parfumier is illustrated in Ming Qing zhuke yishu, Taipei, 1999, pl. 11.
The current brush pot is stylistically very close to the example signed by Gu Jue in the Seattle Art Museum (fig.1), especially the distinct treatment of mountain rocks and trees.

This finely carved brushpot has been carved in the style of and bears the mark of the master carver Gu Jue (1662-1722), zi Zongyu, a native of Jiading, Jiangsu province, and one of the most prominent bamboo carvers active during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. Renowned for his sculptural style that followed the tradition established by the Ming bamboo carver Zhu Sansong, he also excelled in very fine and detailed carvings of figures and landscapes within highly complex compositions that combined high relief with shallow carving, as seen on this piece. According to the Zhuren lu [Record of bamboo carvers], compiled during the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820), “His carving was carefully and skilfully done and even small details were recorded” (translated in the catalogue to the exhibition Ming and Qing Bamboo, Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 2000, p. 65).
Brushpots signed Gu Jue include one carved with a landscape, from the Qing court collection and still in Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Shanghai, 2007, pl. 39; another from the Eugene Fuller Memorial Collection in the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, illustrated in Ip Yee and Laurence C.S. Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving, vol. 1, Hong Kong, 1978, pl. 50; and a third from the Mary and George Bloch collection, sold in these rooms, 23rd October 2005, lot 5.

This brushpot is carved with the favoured Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove motif, a group of scholars of the Wei dynasty (220-265) who had renounced their official status and career in protest against corruption. They advocated freedom of individual beliefs which were inspired by Daoist philosophy. The seven sages, pictured gathered amidst a bamboo grove drinking, composing poetry and enjoying each other’s company, came to represent scholars disenchanted with official policies and are symbols of an incorruptible scholar. The popularity of the subject throughout Chinese history is reflected in its reproduction on a variety of media, such as porcelain, jade and paintings.

The present brushpot is especially fine for its deep and detailed naturalistic carving of the much favoured subject matter of the ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’. Related examples of bamboo brushpots depicting this group of scholars can be found in Masterpieces of Chinese Writing Materials in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 25; and one in the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, included in Ip Yee and Laurence Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part 1, Hong Kong, 1978, pl. 70. This brushpot is comparable with the finely carved bamboo brushpot, from the Mary and George Bloch collection and included in the exhibition The Chinese Scholar’s Desk, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1979, cat.no. 11, sold in these rooms, 23rd October 2005, lot 8. The Mary and George Bloch brushpot bears the signature seal Yuan guan (Official Yuan) indicating that the brushpot was made for presentation to the Emperor.
The ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’ were scholars and officials of the 3rd century A.D. who regularly met in a bamboo grove to drink wine, discuss arts and literature and enjoy unspoiled nature. By rejecting an official career they came to represent a social movement that advocated individual freedom, self-expression and the Daoist ideology of harmony with nature.

The signature ‘Yuan’ on this brush pot very likely refers to the official Liu Yuan (fig. 1), who served as the Minister of Justice during the Kangxi period. The Qing Court Collection contains a Duan inkstone inscribed with the signature ‘Liu Yuan’ with a Kangxi date followed by the seal ‘Yuan’ (fig. 3). The seal on this inkstone compares favourably to the one carved on the current brush pot. Interestingly, the inkstone is contained in a zitan wood box which is carved on the cover with an inscription and the seal ‘Yuan’ (fig. 4). The calligraphic style on the wood box is almost identical to that of the inscription on the current brush pot, and was mostly likely written by the same hand. The resemblance of the seals and calligraphy found on the inkstone, wood box and the current brush pot is a strong indicator that they are related and refer to the Qing dynasty official Liu Yuan. The inkstone is now in the Palace Museum Collection and illustrated in The Four Treasures of the Study – Writing Paper and Inkstones, Hong Kong, 2005, pl. 62.
Liu Yuan was known to be an accomplished painter and calligrapher. Several of his paintings are now kept in the Beijing Palace Museum, such as (fig. 2). According to Qing shi gao, ‘Manuscript of Qing History’, published during the early Republic period, Liu Yuan devised several hundreds of design of Imperial porcelain pieces following the re-opening of the official kilns in Jingdezhen during the Kangxi period. According to another source Zaiyuan zazhi, written by Liu Tingji who was a contemporary of Liu Yuan, many of the scholar’s objects and works of art made for use in the Imperial household were in fact designed by Liu Yuan, including ink, lacquer, porcelain and wood carvings.
From the sources above, it is possible to deduce that Liu Yuan was an extremely talented ‘designer’, who was the mastermind behind many of the works of art made for the inner court. The current brush pot, which bears an inscription and seal of Liu Yuan, is also very likely to have been designed by him as reflected by the well-balanced composition and intricate rendition of the details.

The ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Groove’ were a group of 3rd century scholars who rejected official duties in favour of rustic life, and often gathered in a bamboo groove to drink wine and to discuss art and literature. The theme was popularly adopted by bamboo carvers of the 17th/18th century, with slight variations in the overall composition. Compare with four similar examples, the first from the Beijing Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Forbidden City Publishing House, 2002, no. 29; from the Dexinshuwu Collection, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30 May 2005, lot 1291; in the Mary and George Bloch Collection, sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 23 October 2005, lot 8; and an example sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 3 December 2008, lot 2313.

13.8 cm. (5 3/8 in.) high
