Catalogue note
The present jardinière belongs to a small group of vessels that successfully incorporate two decorative styles – the doucai palette invented in the Ming dynasty, and famille-rose enamels developed in the Yongzheng period. The sturdily potted vessel, densely painted with Rococo-inspired composite floral scrolls outlined in cobalt blue and enhanced by bright, opaque enamels, represents the Qianlong Emperor’s eclectic taste that shaped the development during his reign.

A few similar jardinières are preserved in major museums, including one from the J.M. Hu collection in the Shanghai Museum, published in Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hu, Shanghai, 1989, cat. no. 68; another in the Idemitsu Museum, Tokyo, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1987, pl. 947; and a further example in Sekai toji zenshu / Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 15, Tokyo, 1983, pls 94 and 95. Comparable jardinières were sold in these rooms, 27th April 1999, lot 432, and 2nd May 2000, lot 675. A similar example was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 28th November 2006, lot 1546.

盆折沿，弧腹下斂。底內、器壁內外及折沿上下滿繪鬥彩纏枝蓮紋，蓮心書篆體團「壽」字，各邊繞以福壽紋一周，內壁上下加飾彩雲紋二圈。盆心團蓮飾描金萬字紋，繞以礬紅壽字四個。口沿、壽字及萬字紋描金。外底飾粉彩團蓮一朵，環以彩蝠紋兩圈。

鬥彩由釉下彩和釉上彩兩種釉彩組成，先以青花於瓷胎上勾勒出圖案輪廓線的全體或主體，罩上透明釉，入窰高溫燒成後，再於輪廓中填入一種到多種的彩料，二次入窰以低溫烘燒。鬥彩初創於宣德時期，歷經成化的發展高峰及明中晚期的低潮階段，於康熙時復興。雍正時期，開始於釉上彩色系中引入琺瑯彩料，其可混色且易於渲染的特性，大幅增添了色彩的種類及富麗，為瓷畫帶來了前所未有的漸層、立體效果。

乾隆鬥彩承襲了前朝優異的基礎，力求出新，以色彩豐富、彩繪精緻、畫面華麗著稱。此時的另一特色為在紋樣上描金，使畫面更顯富麗堂皇。此器為乾隆鬥彩器中較少見的大型器物，在直徑達45公分的盆體上滿繪紋飾，以設色淡雅的青花細膩地勾繪出帶有西洋風格的纏枝花葉，再將礬紅、胭脂紅、紫、洋黃、水綠、藍色等琺瑯料精細地填入，加以白彩適時暈染、金彩重點描繪，畫面層次紛陳、活潑生動，可謂集成型、彩飾、焙燒工藝之大成的傑作。

迄今未見相同之例，最接近者為首都博物館所藏一例，品種相同，形制、大小亦相仿，惟紋飾以多種花卉所構成，2000年曾於紐約佳士得《Treasures from Ancient Beijing》展出，見展覽圖錄16頁。另可比較一件乾隆無款粉彩福壽暗八仙紋花口折沿盆，尺寸稍小（40.8公分），2002年5月7日於香港蘇富比拍賣，拍品533 號。

此器2005年5月2日於香港蘇富比拍賣，拍品605號。

Famille rose enamels were first incorporated into the doucai palette during the Yongzheng period, their range of transparent, translucent and opaque colours, stand in strong contrast to the cobalt-blue contours, creating an unprecedented visual interplay both rich in colour and texture. During the Qianlong period, the production of doucai wares was taken to new heights, bringing more elaborate designs that required exceptionally high level of painting and enamelling. The present basin is a wonderful example that testifies to such technical dexterity and artistic sophistication. The outlines of the design had been meticulously painted in underglaze blue with a very complex but well-balanced composition, famille rose enamels were then painstakingly filled in with great precision, and the addition of gilt highlights, which was new to the doucai palette until this stage, further endows the colourful and much textured picture with resplendence.

No other examples of this exact design appears to have been published, but one unmarked basin decorated with the Eight Daoist Treasures in doucai and famille rose was sold in Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 7 May 2002, lot 533, which is closely associated with the current example both in terms of its shape and decorative techniques.
