CONDITION REPORT

Intact, with a dark green patina. Some gilding preserved on the proper right arm and leg. Minor pitting, losses, surface wear and oxidation throughout.
Subject to the foregoing, it is our opinion that the work appears to be in generally good condition.

Lot Essay
Bacchus (or Dionysos to the Greeks) was a multifaceted god, whose diverse purview included theater, fertility and of course: wine, including its production and consumption. Due to his association with the grape, he is often depicted with berries and vines, as seen in the present example. Depicted nude but for a chlamys draped over his shoulders, his left arm raised, his hand once holding a now-missing attribute, his right at this side holding a torch, wearing a wreath of ivy and berries around his head

Lot Essay
Satyrs in Roman art were typically depicted as half man, half goat mythological beings who served as companions to the wine god, Bacchus. As part of his entourage, satyrs were known to assist the god in revelry making.
