According to Hahner (2007: pl. 82), “The Kuba, a confederation of nineteen ethnic groups dominated by the Bushong, have over twenty different mask types considered embodiments of spirits. The three most significant types, Mwaash Amboy, Bwoom, and Ngaady a Mwaash, belong to the royal family. When they appear together during public ceremonies, initiation celebrations for boys, or rituals concerning the sacred king, the masqueraders invoke the Bushong myth of creation and also historical events. Ngaady a mwaash represents the sister and wife of Woot, progenitor of the Bushong.”

Kuba Pwoom Itok mask (N ° 7099) Ex private collection of African art Be. Remarkable and unique piece, bulging eyes, a mouth simulating a cry of dismay, this mask is reminiscent of the tortured canvases of certain famous painters of the 20th century, it is equipped with a headdress made of cowries. The Kuba are the most prolific group in Western Kasai. Kuba art has mainly developed around the royal person. This prestigious culture, made famous by its masks, just like the big royal masks, these are very elaborate and serve as objects of power, and currency of exchange between groups. Likewise, there are royal statuettes and its “Kasai velvets” are also magnificent ceremonial costumes. Kuba masks find their identity during rites of passage.

CATALOGUE NOTE

Ibeji – honoring the memory of the deceased twin (s) – often appear in pairs, much more rarely in threes, as here. Their clothes – tunic and traditional abetiaja headdress falling over the ears – signify the social status and wealth of the family, cowrie shells being used as currency in the northern Yoruba territories.
