The deep rounded walls of the jardiniere is finely ‘pencilled’ in dark blue outline and filled with a paler blue wash with four lotus clusters comprising lotus blooms, pods, leaves and millet emerging from rolling waves above a band of upright lappet panels. The barbed rim is decorated with a band of classic scroll and the foot with four detached scrolling motifs. The base with an aperture in the centre is unglazed.

a 9 by 2 cm crescent shaped area of restoration to the rim, a further 2 by 1cm area inside the rim, minor fritting to the edges, some glaze imperfections

Stem bowls of this particular form are usually found covered in monochrome glazes, and rarely feature polychrome decoration. For monochrome-glazed stem bowls of this form, see the copper-red-glazed Qianlong-marked example, of slightly larger size (7 3/8 in. diam), sold at Christie’s New York, 13-14 September 2018, lot 1385, and the Yongzheng-marked stem bowl of comparable size to the current example, but covered in an apple-green glaze and incised with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition, The Ceramic Art of China, 1971, and subsequently sold at Christie’s London, 9 November 2004, lot 162.

This nineteenth-century heavily potted straight-sided vessel is supported by bracket feet at the corners. Each side is decorated with a rigid spray of fruits and flowers; many of the motifs seem to be taken from fourteenth- and fifteenthcentury Chinese blue-and-white porcelains. The creamytoned glaze is crackled and has a waxy appearance.
